Oklahoma’s best known homophobe joins Chick-Fil-A controversy

You can’t possibly be surprised that our state’s premier drama queen felt the need to weigh in on this pressing national issue with a press release calling for public demonstrations of moral outrage.

Kern Urges Oklahomans to Support Chick-Fil-A

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. Sally Kern is urging Oklahomans to support Chick-Fil-A and to participate in the Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day event scheduled for next Wednesday.

“Chick-Fil-A is a company that has incorporated traditional values into its business model, the same values that a large majority of Oklahomans adhere to,” said Kern, R-Oklahoma City. “This is a company that respects its employees and customers and creates jobs for young people. The hate and intolerance they have been subjected to in the past week is astonishing, and I encourage Oklahomans to rally behind this company and show our support.”

Kern noted that voters overwhelmingly passed a state Constitutional amendment in 2004 that stated that prohibited same-sex marriage and declared marriage to be between one man and one woman.

“Seventy-six percent of Oklahoma voters believe that marriage is an institution for one man and one woman,” said Kern, noting the percentage of voters who approved the state question. “What the owner of Chick-Fil-A said is nothing controversial to Oklahomans.”

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has created the “Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day” Facebook page to encourage citizens across the nation to support the company by dining at their local franchises on August 1. So far, more than 290,000 people have indicated they plan on participating nationwide.

According to the company’s website, there are 13 locations across Oklahoma.

Maybe gay-friendly Okies need to stage their own actions at the restaurants next Wednesday, to give those who follow Kern’s advice a real show.

Just don’t buy anything.

Oklahoma Democrats, state citizens, and nation respond to Sally Kern’s remarks in State House

From an email from the Oklahoma Democratic Party:

About Sally Kern...

Hi All!
[...]

As everyone knows, the news of the week both on a local and national level has been the comments made by Rep. Sally Kern on the House Floor in the late hours of session on Wednesday.  As someone who was there in person, imagine my utter shock as I heard the words exit her mouth.  Between the audible gasps throughout the chamber and the jaws dropped between myself and those around, it was hard to gather my thoughts.  Being the communications person I am, I recognized the necessity for an immediate response--contacting Todd and the ODP team.  We utilized both traditional and social media outlets, which were key, and as you are aware, it spread like wild fire. While I understand I helped bring more embarrassing attention to our great state, it must be said, comments like her's, and mentalities like her's cannot be ignored and should be confronted.  Hopefully starting now, we can build momentum and campaigns to get people such as Rep. Kern out of office. The truth is, the news of the day is that SJR15 passed. Kern's comments just were an ironic blatant example of why the bill should not have passed, why discrimination against minorities and women is not dead, and why affirmative action is still needed. Now it will be a question on the ballot in 2012, and I hope we can work together to inform voters of Oklahoma what the facts are and why not protecting minorities is bad for business.

I do urge everyone to take any action they can regarding her statements--sign petitions, call her, call Republican leadership, inform your neighbors, co-workers and family.  Her apologies fall on deaf ears--her words are obviously indicative of her 'true spirit' and ideology--and no "I'm sorry" is going to negate that fact.

I wish Sally Kern would follow the words of the Dalai Lama:
"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." But until then, we can conduct ourselves in that matter and confront those who ignite and spread hate.

Democratically yours,
A proud hard-working woman,

Is it Time to Put an End to Affirmative Action? A Citizen Discussion

Fannie Bates of Oklahoma City:
I was admitted to American University as part of their affirmative action program, because I was from Little Dixie (or, as sociologists call it, "Little Appalachia").  It had nothing to do with race.  Affirmative action has helped thousands of people of all races.  Overall, I think it has done more for women than for any other single group.  But we do not have a level playing field yet, so it is not time to abolish it.  I hope that day comes in my lifetime. Teri McGraf asked "What will come out of this anti-affirmative action bill?"  For starters, it will cost the state millions to defend it in federal court.  That is our money that could have been spent on public transportation!

Like I've said before, although there might not be a perfect answer to this issue, affirmative action is the only safegaurd currently in place (at least it was). Until we live in a world where everyone has an equal chance and the playing f...ield is level for everyone, then we need protection for women and minorities. Oklahoma is definitley NOT a state that has gotten rid of racism and gender bias, our current legislation reeks of bigotry and oppression, and therefore, we need protections in place for women and minorities. Is it a perfect system? No, it is not. Is it better than nothing? Yes, it is.

Jim Joplin  said:
"From the NAACP website: 'Affirmative Action was established in 1965 by President Johnson in order to redress the discrimination that was evident in employment, education and business despite the civil rights laws which made such discrimination illegal. The purpose of Affirmative Action is to provide opportunities for minorities and women; it is not meant to create quotas.' "

LeAnn Stevens-Larré said:
So "work twice as hard to get half as much" is enough? Would you say the same thing to women who are historically discriminated against in the hiring process and in the workplace (salary, promotion)? Is that the only answer? Or are there other ways to make it fairer? I'm not saying Affirmative Action is the best way, but is pulling oneself up by one's own bootstraps possible for those who have no boots?

Teri McGrath of Lawton said:
If you think affirmative action is some kind of special treatment for people who are otherwise incapable of succeeding then you do not understand it in the same way I do. We are not talking about the same thing--and the conversation is embarrassing because it is based on an understanding of women and minorities as a bunch of lazy whiners--I do not share Sally Kern's worldview.
What good will come from passing this legislation? Can anyone tell me that?
Shannon couldn't.
I can see a lot of bad coming from it, potentially, and I suspect we will when it passes and becomes a part of our actual state constitution.
Wh...y would we do this? Just help me understand why. What is TW Shannon trying to accomplish?
He says he Affirmative action creates feelings of inferiority--I wonder if getting through four years of college without ever seeing a non-white face at the front of the classroom has a negative affect on people. It is quite quite possible that was TW Shannon's experience here at Cameron.

Mrs. Jim Crow: "We’re all sinners" , aka, Okla Rep. Sally Kern

http://bit.ly/mG9B94

Not content with denigrating gays and lesbians Mrs. Crow now takes on women and African-Americans.

Mrs. Jim Crow says "We're all sinners ."  Mrs. Jim Crow, continuing her sermon yesterday, said, "Discrimination [is] part of our fallen nature."

Mrs. Jim Crow, formally known as Oklahoma GOPer Rep. Sally Kern, first came to infamy as the woman with the truth, the crusading culture warrior for her god, who proclaimed that gay men are worse than terrorists, who like cancer, need to be removed.

HB 1551 – Creationism Bill – to be Discussed in Education Committee Feb. 22

From the desk of Rob Abiera:

According to emails from Vic Hutchison & others, Sally Kern has substituted
new language in HB1551 in an apparent attempt to appear to respond to
criticism that has been made against her bill. This new language is on the
agenda of the house Common Ed Committee (Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011).

According to reports, the new language accomplishes the same creationist
goals as the original.

Keep the heat on! Write the committee members - except for Coody & Kern!
Tell them the new language won't wash - it's just as bad as before & we're
not buying it!

From the desk of Fannie Bates:

Calling works too!
